DMOZ is the first specific example of a one-way incoming link mentioned in this blog, there are a few additional aspects of linking that you need to understand before we go any further.

Firstly, the Google Page Rank of the page that sends you a link is relevant to the value of that link. If, for example, you have a one way incoming link from a page that has no Google PR, that link is significantly less valuable than one coming from a page that has already acquired PR8.

However, note that it is called Page Rank and not Site Rank. This is for the specific reason that every individual page of a website has its own PR, and internal pages are likely to have a far lower level of achieved PR than the homepage. Even though the DMOZ homepage has a PR score of 8/10, the page on which your site will be featured that therefore creates the one-way incoming link to you is likely to have a far lower score.

However, a small degree of the Page Rank power of the homepage is spread throughout the site. So, the PR of the homepage is still slightly relevant as far as the value of the incoming link is concerned.

From this, you can draw two important conclusions.

First, even if you are accepted for the DMOZ directory, there will be a one-way incoming link generated, but it will not have Google PR8 attached to it.
Secondly and in contrast, incoming links from sites that have highly rated homepages are more valuable than incoming links from sites that have no (or low) Google PR.

Remember this latter point in particular, because the notion of generating links from sites with a high Google PR homepage will come up again many times during the course of this report.

To return to the directories - apart from DMOZ, there are quite a few others who will accept free submissions, and as every one of these directories that accept your application will generate a one-way link to your site, and could potentially send visitors, it is worth submitting your details to every free directory.

Try to get listed with those that are the highest rated and those that will list your site most quickly, and then work down the list when you have time to do so.

What youre doing here is following the age-old theory of advertising, which is to do everything you can to get your prospect to do what you want them to do right now. The bottom line is, if they read your article and dont click on your link to visit your site, then they are never going to do so, so it has to be now or never.

Your article should paint a word picture of just how much they will benefit from following your advice, or what will happen if they dont take the action that you want them to take. Tell them how they can use the product that you are recommending, and how it will enhance their life when they do so.

Finally, make sure that you tell them why they have to do it now, and what to do in order to take action. You might be surprised to see how many people will take action as long as you instruct them to do so and tell them exactly what they have to do.

However, while you build up to the final call to action throughout your article, you do not include the final instruction of what your reader should do to take advantage of whatever it is you offering in your article. This may sound a little strange, but bear with me for a moment, and it will all become clear.

You have to submit a two or three sentence summary of your article.

Many would-be article marketers are very lazy and are content to use the first two or three sentences of their article for this short summary, but this is a big mistake.

Some of the article directories are extremely popular with the search engines, as (for example) articles from the leading directory site, EzineArticles regularly appear in the Google top 10 search results.

When this happens, the short summary you add to your upload is the description shown on the results page (in black) directly beneath the title (in blue):

Consequently, if your description is not persuasive and hard-hitting, there is a very good chance that the searcher will ignore your site to look elsewhere, so using the first two or three sentences of your article as your description is a very poor choice.

Next, you have to add a list of keyword phrases. Most sites limit the number of characters you can use, but use as many of them as you can by listing as many keywords as you can think of.

Finally, you have to add the Resource box, which is a short description of you and your business. Most article authors use the resource box in exactly this way they will add some information about themselves or their business. You should not do it this way, because there is a far more powerful and effective strategy.

You do this because it is only in the resource box that you can include links to your site, with a general rule being that you can include up to three active hyperlinks. I would recommend that you include one hyperlink that is the URL of the page that you want the reader to visit, and one more hyperlink that is a link contained within the main keyword term that your article is focused on.

Finally, before you upload your article, check whether the directory site you are going to upload your article to accepts photographs, and if they do, whether those photographs are published next your resource box (as they are by EzineArticles):

Probably the most important aspect of on-page optimization is the domain name that you choose for your site. It must fulfill certain criteria, such as:

Are your business activities accurately represented by that domain name?
Is it a name that will be easy for your prospects and customers to remember?
Does it contain at least one of your main keyword phrases?

Wherever possible, the domain name that headlines your business should satisfy all three of these requirements.

Okay, so that is two thirds of your link network established. The only remaining aspect of linking to deal with is the most important one, establishing one-way incoming links. We will deal with this on a step-by-step basis as we go through this report.

However, one final thing to mention is the internal linking structure of your site. While everything we have dealt with so far has concerned external links, your site must be linked together in a logical and effective way on an internal basis as well. For example, you must have a site map on your homepage so that your visitors and the search engine robots can find their way around. As you will discover as you read through this report, there are many types of directory site. For everything that exists on the internet, there will be a directory (or more commonly, many directories) where whatever it is will be listed and categorized.

Some of these directories will focus on particular types of web content, such as articles, videos or blogs. However, at the highest level, there are many directories that list and categorize websites, and if you can get your site listed, it is advantageous in traffic terms. There are two types of directory to which you can apply, those that are free, and those that you have to pay for in order to be listed.

This is where you have something of a theres good news and theres bad news scenario.

The good news is that the most important site directory, which is the Open Directory Project or DMOZ directory, is completely free to apply for and to be listed in. This is worth doing, because the DMOZ directory is where Google and many other search engines obtain a lot of their information.

The bad news is that DMOZ is an entirely voluntary project, staffed by voluntary editors, and it can therefore take anything between two months and two years for your application to be assessed. Dont even think of asking them to hurry up, because that is almost guaranteed to put your application back to the bottom of the pile!

On top of this, the editors who work for DMOZ do tend to be something of a law unto themselves, so there is no guarantee, that they will accept your site, even after you have waited a year or two for their decision.

There is little you can do about speeding up the DMOZ editorial and acceptance process, so if you have not already applied to DMOZ, I would recommend that you do so immediately after finishing reading this book.

In the future, apply to DMOZ as soon as you register your domain name, because even if youre not going to build your website for six months, you can be pretty confident that they will not get round to reviewing it in that time.

If your application is (eventually) successful, the results are almost always worth the wait. Because the DMOZ directory has so much clout with Google, a listing in the directory automatically means that your site will receive a significant search engine boost. In addition, getting your site listed will generate a one-way incoming link from DMOZ. The homepage of the directory is extremely highly rated when measured by Google Page Rank, which is a commonly accepted measure of site value and popularity.

However, the concept of keyword density has become a little obsolete, as Google is now looking at articles in a different way based on a concept known as Latent Semantic Indexing.

Remembering that the importance of keywords to the search engine robots is that they enable them to identify the subject matter of any content materials correctly, the theory of LSI is that certain words or terms go together. For example, according to LSI theory, if you wrote an article about Microsoft then the name of Bill Gates should appear somewhere in that article. The name helps the search robot to qualify the meaning of the article, which is making the Google search algorithm far more accurate.

The way you do this is to write articles that contain two or three closely related keyword phrases. One of these keyword phrases should be a major keyword phrase, while one (or perhaps two, but definitely no more) minor keyword phrases are also included.

According to Word Tracker, there are more than 3000 people who are searching Google for dog training related information every day. There is no fixed number of how many searches a day you need to justify categorizing a search term as a major keyword phrase, but as an approximate rule of thumb, you can use 1% of the total searches shown at the top of the chart.

So, in this particular example, with just over 3000 searches every day, I would see any phrase with 30 searches and above as a major keyword phrase and anything below that would qualify as a minor term.

However, as youre going to use all of the keyword terms on your list at some time or another, it does not really matter how you mix and match them as long as there are a least a couple of keyword phrases in your article. Apart from having a domain name that accurately reflects what your site is about, the other main on-page SEO requirement is to have accurate meta-tags, which are elements of the underlying page code that the search engine robots will look for when they visit.

At one time, meta-tags were the #1 most important aspect of SEO, but because many SEO specialists and experts were able to manipulate meta-tags in a way that the search engine people did not like, their value has now been significantly demoted. Indeed, it is generally believed that Google (who are, after all, the number one search engine, commanding just short of 70% of the global search market) pay absolutely no attention to meta-tags. However, that leaves 30% of the search engines that do use meta-tags, and it is therefore to your advantage to make sure that they are properly formulated.
